Growth Energy to AAA: Demand API Pull Misleading Ad Campaign

WASHINGTON, DC — Following the recent launch of the American Petroleum Institute’s (API) new ad campaign attacking ethanol, which twists prior statements made by the AAA, portraying the AAA as “anti-ethanol”, Tom Buis CEO of Growth Energy sent a letter to Mr. Robert L. Darbelnet, President and CEO of AAA, asking that he request that API removing the disingenuous ads.

Buis outlined in the letter how the API ad was nothing more than an attack ad on ethanol in which API twisted previous statements to portray AAA as supportive of a repeal of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), which they have publicly stated they are against.

In the letter, Buis noted, Your own organization also recently released a statement noting, ‘AAA believes that ethanol-blended fuels have the potential to provide motorists a clear choice at the pump that supports jobs, promotes energy independence and reduces fuel costs.’”

Buis concluded by stating, “To maintain the integrity of AAA, and not allow outside groups to misuse your image to further policy goals that your organization does not share, it is my hope you will make a swift call to action, requesting that API pull this disingenuous, misleading ad campaign.”
