American Ethanol Responds to Distortions

WASHINGTON, DC – Corporate oil and food groups were on Capitol Hill today trumpeting a series of desperate distortions and myths about the potential American ethanol has to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, create U.S. jobs and cut carbon emissions.

Chris Thorne, Director of Public Affairs for Growth Energy, America’s coalition of ethanol supporters, released the following statement:

“There are some special interests that put their own corporate profit before America’s public interest, and we’re seeing that today with these desperate tactics today by Big Oil and Big Food to distort the truth. But it’s the same old tricks they tried a few years ago when rampant Wall Street speculation drove up grain prices – and eventually drove those prices into the ground when the balloon collapsed. I ask now, as I asked then: did grocery store prices fall when corn prices fell? No. In fact, even as grain prices fell by half, these global food companies were continuing to increase prices – and chalk up record profits.

“Members of Congress, their staffs, and the American people deserve better, even from big special interests doing all they can to preserve the status quo they’ve been allowed to enjoy for far too long.”
