Obama visit to Missouri planned (Kansas City Star)

President Barack Obama will visit Missouri next week as part of his “Main Street tour.”

His swing through the Midwest, which will also make stops in Iowa and Illinois, will include Macon in northeast Missouri, where he is expected to visit an ethanol plant. Obama has supported ethanol and other biofuels, saying they are important in helping reduce our reliance on imported oil.

The tour is meant to give Obama an opportunity to talk to workers, small-business owners and others around the country about the economy and adding jobs.

The Macon ethanol plant was the first in Missouri when it opened in 2000. It produces 46 million gallons a year using corn. The plant is owned by Poet Biorefining in Sioux Falls, S.D., which owns 26 ethanol plants that produce a billion gallons of ethanol a year.

At some of its plants, including the one in Macon, Poet plans to add facilities that use cellulose, from such sources as grass and wood, to make ethanol.
