Gen. Clark Says Foreign Oil Threatens America’s National Security
Gen. Clark is well known in the United States for his 34 years of service in the U.S. Army, rising from the ranks to become a four-star general and serving as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander. During that time at NATO he oversaw the end of hostilities in the Balkan War, a significant achievement for peace.
But did you know that as an Army captain in 1973 he predicted that – unless the United States changed course – our nation would have to commit significant military resources to the Persian Gulf to protect our growing dependence on foreign oil? You can read that story in an anthology of essays published by the Center for Security Policy.
Gen. Clark’s essay, “The World According to Biofuels,” breaks down the evolution of the first U.S. military involvement in the Middle East, known as the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force, to what we know today as U.S. Central Command, with a costly and expensive mission to protect oil shipping routes being conducted by the Fifth Naval Group.
